4/1/03. With temps projected in the mid-80s I played hooky from work and spent the day working on the wings. I laid out all the skins so they'd get hot and expand. This keeps the skins from oil-canning if you put them on cool or cold. You can see the reflections on the bottom of the hangar door. I got a good start on a tan today, too. :>)

HOLY HOLES, BATMAN! There's about 2000 holes to drill in this wing! I spent most of the day drilling. The rivet spacer made short work out of marking where to drill.

The first skin is clecoed on and the second one is clamped for drilling.

4/21/03. While waiting for fiberglass resin to harden, I finish up the landing lights. The replacement lenses Jay sent me were a bit long this time, but making them shorter is a lot easier than making them longer.

4/26/03. A nice Saturday morning started out with swapping the fuselage for the wing. With the exception of the NACA vents in the nose cone, the fuselage is done. Wile everything was out, Sam helped me sweep out the hangar.

Sam's boyfriend Jamison came over, and in typical Huck Finn style, I convinced them that marking and drilling 500 holes was fun. Sam went along one side finishing up the marking, while Jamison went along with the drill. Together they saved me about 6 hours today.

Even Dale wanted to help, so I found him a job. Using the blow dryer worked better than the halogen lights for expanding the wing skins for drilling.

Jamison finished on the bottom side and went around to the top. Dale is still helping out with the blow dryer. 241.5 hours up to this point.

5/10/03. The rest of the wing skins were drilled and Debbie helped me glue and rivet the lower skins today.

5/14. Wing skins are all done. 395 hours.

5/16 Flaps are installed.

Ailerons are installed. All that's left are the wingtips.

5/18/03. The wing is done. I ran out of sanding discs for the DA sander, so one panel is still shiny. I'll finish it at the body shop. Looks like I'm going to end up painting it myself, since the paint deal is falling apart. :>(

I left the flaps and ailerons unhooked, so it would be easier to paint. I got 20 hours in this weekend, including 3 masking the fuselage for paint at the body shop. Total is now up to 415 hours..
