Painting the Titan, part 2

paintjob5.jpg (15937 bytes) 5/2/03.  The second try at shooting the white came out OK, with only a little lifting.  A quick sanding and re-shoot on the spot left me with an all-white plane.  Time for the color, now.  3 hours of masking got me up to the point of shooting red.  The belly will be solid red as well as the leading edges.  This will make it easier to see from the ground.  The upper surfaces will have more white, so it's easier to see from the air.
paintjob6.jpg (18082 bytes) The body shop deal is still going South, and I'm to use only the leftover paints they have on a shelf.  That, and I have to pay for the new materials I use.  :>(

The red is done, and it came out reasonably well.  The quality tape the body shop uses left no bleeding.

paintjob7.jpg (18160 bytes) It's not quite a flame job, but more a cross between flames and a tribal theme that's popular now on Harleys.  The paint process is a basecoat/clearcoat system, so it's not very glossy at this point.
paintjob8.jpg (19879 bytes) 5/26/03.   I found a nice blue metallic paint, and mixed a little red with it to get this purple.  With the body shop owner anxious to just get me out of there, I stopped at this point, and clear coated it.  The shine is incredible!  It also can be buffed within 2 hours, so Debbie and I went home to clean up and grab the trailer.  It was midnight when we got it loaded.
fusepaint1.jpg (32794 bytes) Here's the finished fuselage at my hangar.  I plan on adding some vinyl graphics to finish up my design, and will call it good.
fusepaint2.jpg (31386 bytes) Now that the fuselage is home, I can get the engine on and running when I'm not slaving away at the body shop on the wing...
curttape1.jpg (17488 bytes) The body shop deal went sour, and I ended up pulling the wing out of there, but not after getting a $1600 bill for using their leftover paint and the paint booth.  :>(  I will never do business with that place again.  That, along with other business practices was enough that Debbie quit working there, too.  My friend Curt said we could use a shop at his work, so we brought it over at 8am Saturday, May 31st.  Here Curt follows behind my initial taping with paper.
tape1.jpg (22267 bytes) After several hours of taping, Curt was telling me to just tape straight lines and do a zebra scheme.  :>)  I owe him big time for the help salvaging my paint job.  Here the bottom of the wing has been taped and is now ready for some red.
redbase1.jpg (23223 bytes) I borrowed an HVLP spray gun from an ex-employee of Jay's (who also got tired of his crap) and started spraying.  The gun lays on the paint nicely with very little overspray.
redbase2.jpg (22376 bytes) The shop is actually a saw shop where there's a grinder (in the back) for chewing up wasted material, and several saws for making things out of wood.
purple1.jpg (25137 bytes) By the time we were finishing up with the purple, it was around 2am.  It looks good, so I decided that was enough color.  Can you say "severe burnout"?  We still had the clear coat to go.
clearcoat4.jpg (23803 bytes) 3am on June 1st, and the clear coat is applied.  The effect is astounding, as you can see from the difference in the leading edge that's already been sprayed.
clearcoat5.jpg (22353 bytes) clearcoat1.jpg (22794 bytes)clearcoat2.jpg (21413 bytes)
clearcoat3.jpg (23766 bytes) The last part was clear coating the stabilator.  We took the wing over to the fly-in across the street at the airport later in the morning after a couple hours sleep.  Save for some buffing, the paint job is done.
