Building the Fuselage Part 3

firewall1.jpg (28898 bytes) Only after I found the instructions and drawings for the aft panels in the bottom of the box (they weren't in the book) did I realize my nice firewall would have to be scrapped, since the panels go UNDER the firewall.  I'm still thinking of ways to salvage what I've done, but in the meantime I've bought an aluminum piece to replace it.
aftpanel1.jpg (23181 bytes) Aft panels being fitted.
912s1.jpg (25499 bytes) 3/10/03.  The 912S has arrived.  Can't wait to get it going!  Update:  Looks like I have to wait at least a little bit.  I couldn't find any motor mounts in the box.  :>(
kevpaneloverlap.jpg (31764 bytes) I've snugged the kevlar panels up as tight as they will go, and had this much overlap on the front tubes.  The instructions say not to overlap at all, so I have some cutting to do.
kevpanels1.jpg (28721 bytes) 3/16/03.  3rd time's a charm with the firewall.  I left the original firewall in, since I felt it would weaken the structure by taking it completely out.  I spent most of a day fitting the panels and new firewall.  There's some rubber trim around the oil reservoir to keep it from rubbing against the firewall.
debbieeingine.jpg (31923 bytes) 3/22/03.  Debbie came out and helped me put the engine one.  Man, was that heavy!  I lifted it up there while she positioned it for the mounts.
engine2.jpg (33351 bytes) It's on.  Now for the connections.
rearskin1.jpg (41010 bytes) An all-day project of hooking stuff up to the engine left me just enough time to cleco the rear belly skin on.  Tomorrow I'll rivet it on and do the forward skin.  222 hours up to this point.
Bellyskin7.jpg (42651 bytes) 3/23/03.  Belly skins are on.  I left the upper left skin uncut until I could figure out how the window was going to fit to it.  After using a dozen clamps holding the window, it made sense, and I trimmed/drilled/clecoed/riveted the rest of the belly skin on.
lwindow1.jpg (30540 bytes) 9 hour day workday today.   I got a lot accomplished.  The left window is all drilled and clecoed.
lwindow2.jpg (35996 bytes) The end is near, now.  I'm going to have to finalize a paint scheme soon.  It's also getting warm enough that I can move out of my 10'X20' bubble and have some REAL room to build.
panel2.jpg (22475 bytes) The instrument panel is mostly finished.  I used a holographic vinyl layer over an aluminum panel.  A ring of black was sprayed around the edges to tone it down a bit.  The sub-panels are done the same way.
panel3.jpg (33732 bytes) See how the pattern changes with different lighting.
nosecone1.jpg (20118 bytes) The hood for the panel isn't done yet, so I moved on to the nose cone.  Here, it's just clamped on.  I'm making it removable, so I'm using nut plates all around the tubes.
nosepanel.jpg (25027 bytes) I made a 2-piece aluminum panel for the removable nose cone.  The rear piece will slip under the front, and seal pretty good.
